The official flower and tree of Hiji, the sasanqua camellia, can be found growing at the former residence of the Hiji Domain, on what is now the grounds of Hiji Junior High School. It is estimated that the trees here are around 400 years old, and they have been designated as a natural monument by Oita prefecture.Usally wild camellia are white, but the petals of these camellia have crimson tips.It is said that such garden varieties have been highly valued since long ago.
