Every fall, in the Hokke-ji District of Toyooka, chestnut tiger butterflies can been seen. Also known as 'travelling butterfiles', chestnut tiger butterflies are known for having the trait of moving over long distances like migratory birds. Their favorite food is the nectar of the fragrant eupatorium flower, a type of aster. Originally appearing in Himejima village in Oita, these butterflies began to spread across the region thanks to the Satoyama Conservation's efforts to plant and nurture fragrant eupatorium flowers.
The butterflies can be seen from the beginning of October until the beginning of November, peaking in mid-October. Viewing conditions are best in good weather with no wind between the hours of 10am and 3pm.
