Oita Trappist Monastery was established on July 11th 1980, on Saint Benedict's Day, as the second boys' monastery in Japan. In the name of Christ and under the commandments of St. Benedict, 7 monks were dispatched here from the Trappist Monastery in Hakodate, Hokkaido. They came for the purpose of helping others and bringing peace to the region, living a religious life through prayer and work.
There is an incredible view of Beppu Bay from the hill on which the monastery stands. On a clear day you can see as far as Shikoku, making the hill a perfect place to go for a drive. When visiting the monastery, it is an absolute must to enjoy the view of the monastery juxtaposed with the scenery behind it, which looks something like a scene from a fantasy game.

There is also a cookie factory at the monastery, where 'Trappist Cookies' are made by the hard-working monks themselves. Besides cookies, you can also purchase sweets, butter, beer, wine and other rare goods that have been produced at various monastries.
*Trappist Cookies are also available for purchase at the outer citadel, Ninomaru Yakata.

At the monastery library, discover important materials and a part of Francisco Xavier's skin on display here.
* Groups who want to look around will need to inquire ahead.
