Kote-e was a kind of plasterwork done by craftsmen that was common from the end of the Edo period and in to the Meiji period. It was popularised in the Hiji Domain by Koichi Aoyama and also by his son, Nagaichi. Hiji had some of the highest numbers of Kote-e distributed in Oita prefecture, and there are still kote-e dotted around the town. These include kote-e on a mix of 32 private houses and wall pieces, with 4 of them visible around Hiji Port.
