Seien-Seisha was a small private school opened in 1842 by renowned scholar Banri Hoashi, one of the three sages of Bungo.
It is said that at the school's peak there were around 130 students.
Where the school once stood, there is now a monument which was put up in the Meiji period by local people in praise of Banri.
The monument reads, 'Banri Hoashi Teacher, Seien-Seisha Ruins'.
Nearby the monument, there is a seperate monument listing the names of those who were involved in the project, starting with the leader of Minamihata village at the time.
