Along with Baien Miura and Tanso Hirose, Banri Hoashi is one of the three sages of Hiji, recognised as a great Confucian scholar and politician of the Edo period.
His grave was erected by order of the 14th Daimyo of the Hiji Domain, Toshikata Kinoshita. It overlooks Hiji castle and Beppu Bay from a small hill to the west of his family Temple, Ryusenji.
