According to historical records dating to 734, it can be inferred that Yatsushima shrine was constructed to house the guardian deity of Takaharu Usa, an assistant general to the Tsushima. Inside the shrine grounds is a stone pathway reminiscent of those times. There is also a Torii gate said to have been built with a donation from Sorin Otomo, an influential feudal lord of the Otomo Clan. As a shrine with a long history, grand festivals have been held here since ancient times. Nowadays, an annual autumn festival is held in October. Traditional Japanese music and dance performances such as Tsushima Kagura and Tsujima Gaku are offered to the gods.
