This shrine's foundations are believed to have begun when Nohigi Oga, the founder of Usa Hachiman Shrine, came to pray at a shrine on the land where the Oga Clan lived. Later, at the end of the Nara period, upon seeing that the shrine had fallen into ruin, it was renovated as a Buddhist temple. When constructed in Bungo Province, it was revered for the first time as Atago Shrine. It is said that Takatsuka Jizo, a Buddhist guardian statue of travelers located in Amagase, Hita City, was also worshipped as a branch deity of this shrine. Two deities are enshrined here: Izanami no Mikoto, the Shinto goddess of creation, and Kagutsuchi no Mikoto, the son who caused her death. During the Edo Era (1603-1868), they were the guardian deities of Hiji Castle.
A spring festival is held here every year on the 4th Sunday in February. At this Buddhist event, called "goma", cedar sticks are burned before an idol to seek blessings. During the autumn festival, held on the 4th Sunday of September, a "kagura" performance recounting Shinto mythology through music and dance is offered to the gods.
