Built on the northern side of the castle hill overlooking the town is Yokozu Shrine. The third lord of Hiji Domain, Toshinaga Kinoshita, who was praised as a wise ruler, is enshrined here as a deity. The day before he passed away at the age of 69, he left behind a last testament commanding that his body be buried here in a Shinto funeral. Until 1870, it was called a mausoleum, but this grave is now referred to as a shrine. Legend has it that when there was a drought, people risked their lives to beg the god of Yokozu Shrine for rain, and it certainly fell.
