Plan Description

Experience the art of Shabutsu, where you copy the image of Buddha with a meditative mind.

At Asahi Temple, situated on a small hill with a picturesque rural landscape, you can engage in Shabutsu and Shakyo in the temple’s impressive main hall. Shabutsu involves placing paper over an original drawing of a deity like Kannon or Yakushi Nyorai and tracing it. After about three minutes of calming your breath and meticulously tracing the lines, you will gradually achieve mental concentration. Although it seems simple to just trace the lines, it is surprisingly challenging and is also known as "writing Zen" for clearing the mind. "Focusing on the task at hand is crucial," says the head priest.
