The Punishment Site Ruins is a historic site in Hiji. Marked with a memorial tower, it is where criminals were taken to be executed during the time of the Hiji Domain. The tower is said to have been erected in 1799 by Dairen Osho of Sho-okuji Temple under the orders of the 11th Daimyo, Toshimasa Kinoshita.
In 1619, at the command of first generation Daimyo Nobutoshi Kinoshita, the Roman Catholic Balthasar Kagayama Hanzaemon was martyred here with his 5-year-old son, Diego.
In October 2007, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oita commissioned the building of Hiji Junkyo Park to commemorate these martyrs.
